—D.R. Wagner, Locke, CA
A passacaglia of yellow
Flowers wandering through
Spring until they are surprised
By a riot of Rembrandt
Tulips and insistent hyacinths
Scattered beneath the Easter light
Of Giant Sequoias.
The voices of children
Somewhere in a near
Distance, proclaiming
The missing body of a Christ,
A Christ hungry for food
Other than his own body,
Thirsty for a wine made
From grapes, not blood
And the company of friends
Not interested so much
In miracles, as in a kindness
Found on the road,
Singing with friends.
A music tied to breath
And the beating of the heart.
A sudden exaltation of meadowlarks
Delighted to have been disturbed
By violins coming from an empty tomb.
A peal of bells and the trumpets
Of lilies blooming themselves
Into the beginnings of what would manifest
As a religious vision
Leaking through centuries of blood.
Today’s LittleNip:
What is the real purpose behind the tooth fairy, the Easter bunny and Santa Claus? They seem like greater steps toward faith and imagination, each with a payoff. Like cognitive training exercises.
